This music was made in dialogue with the landscape and atmosphere of the Isle of Eigg, off the west coast of Scotland. We stayed in a bothy for a week in winter, looking out over the mountains of Rhum; playing together and alone, walking in the hills, and meditating on the relation of music to place, and the process of inspiration.

Some elements of our surroundings found their way into the music with their sonic character more or less intact - a dripping rock, a squeaky stove door, the constant murmur of wind and waves. More oblique points of reference included the shifting densities of cloud across the bay, the gathering evening light, and the scatter of wind-blown ripples in a lochan on the high plateau.

But the core of the project goes beyond explicit reflection of the landscape/soundscape, towards an expression of our personal responses to Eigg, to the wildness and the quietude both. We were seeking to inhabit in the music the same emotional spaces as we’d entered into on the island; trying to play in such a way as felt consonant with our state of being out on the hill.

Those spaces stay with us, and remain a source of inspiration.
